In alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, the 'Ped Bachao, Ped Lagao Jan Abhiyan 2024' campaign was launched on a large scale across the state earlier in the day.
At least 36.50 crore saplings were planted across the state by 6 pm on Saturday, during a one-day plantation drive initiated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, according to the state government.
Adityanath inaugurated the plantation campaign on the banks of the Kukrail River in Lucknow. He also planted saplings in Prayagraj and Gorakhpur. Governor Anandiben Patel participated by planting saplings in Sitapur, while all state government ministers contributed by planting saplings in various districts.
Following the success of the 'Ped Lagao, Ped Bachao Mahabhiyan 2024,' the CM congratulated everyone through a post on his official X account. He wrote, "Today, in the ‘New Uttar Pradesh’ of ‘New India,’ the public welfare resolution of planting more than 36.50 crore saplings in a single day has been fulfilled."
Adityanath congratulated all citizens, public representatives, social organizations, and the government-administration who participated in the massive tree-planting mission.
"If trees are saved, the environment will also be saved. By protecting the environment, we can avoid the horrors of global warming and heat waves. The alarm bell has rung. The total population of UP is 25 crore, and we are going to break the record by planting 36.50 crore saplings. In such a situation, three trees are going to be planted in the name of every mother power in UP within a day today. About 12 crore saplings have been planted since morning. We have to plant trees, save them and preserve the environment," Adityanath said in his earlier address.
"For the first time, we faced the horror of floods. This affected 24 districts of UP, with a population of more than 20 lakh. Due to excessive rainfall in Nepal and Uttarakhand, these were hit by floods. This is the ill effect of global warming. This time in May-June will be remembered for a long time," he said.
During the 'Ped Lagao, Ped Bachao Jan Abhiyan 2024' on Saturday, a large-scale plantation effort took place across various areas, including forest land, defense and railway land, gram panchayat and community land, expressways, roads, canals, railway tracks, development authority areas, industrial complexes, medical institutions, educational institutions, other government lands, and private lands belonging to farmers and citizens.
To ensure transparency, real-time updates were provided through the plantation monitoring system software developed by the forest department.
Earlier, the CM emphasized that the campaign should not be limited to paperwork as in previous administrations but should feature "full transparency and effective monitoring". This year, arrangements for geo-tagging of the plants were also made while the forest department made extensive use of technology to support the initiative. — with PTI inputs
