Uttar Pradesh Creates Lucknow State Capital Region, Mirroring Delhi-NCR

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced the formation of the Lucknow State Capital Region (SCR), modeled after the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). This newly designated area includes Lucknow and the adjoining districts of Hardoi, Sitapur, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Barabanki, covering a total area of 27,826 square kilometers.

Governor Anandiben Patel has approved the establishment of the Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region Development Authority (UP-SCRDA), which will oversee development projects and ensure effective resource management within the SCR. The authority will be chaired by the Chief Minister, with the Chief Secretary as its vice-chairman. Other members will include the Additional Chief Secretary of Housing and Urban Planning, Divisional Commissioners of Lucknow and Ayodhya, District Magistrates of the concerned districts, and Vice-Chairmen of various development authorities.

This initiative, launched by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in September 2022, aims to address the growing population pressure and complaints of unplanned development in the surrounding districts. "People from different cities want to come here and make their permanent residence. The population pressure is also increasing in the surrounding districts, and many times complaints of unplanned development are received. In such a situation, keeping in view future requirements, the 'Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region' should be formed on the lines of the National Capital Region (NCR)," he said.
